Training for volunteers for North/South Exchanges
23 – 26 June 2011, Neu-Anspach (near Frankfurt), GERMANY

Organized in the frame of EU for Citizens project “Volunteering towards Global Citizenship”
by the SCI branches Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland and Slovenia.

Are you interested in global volunteering? Do your country borders seem too narrow for you? Do you want to join the projects concerning human rights, environment, social justice, sustainable development etc? Are you interested in field experiences in a Southern country?
If the answer is YES, then this training is for you!

Project summary:

Exchanges and volunteering experiences in Southern countries require a precise and organic preparation from Northern volunteers. In Southern countries there are sensitive contexts and volunteers have to deal with “otherness”. The training is thought in order to let people understand what a volunteering experience in the South is, with all its difficulties and challenges. Volunteers will also be led to reflect on their active citizenship in the countries where they live.

Aims and objectives:

Aims:
To train the participants to be able to deal with other countries, their habits, cultures.
To train the participants to be able to deal with Nord/South gaps, and to deal with “otherness”.
To let participants explore concepts and values connected with global volunteering within the framework of SCI.

Participants will be able to:
Understand all cultural and sociological aspects concerned with North/South relationships.
Understand the relations between an individual and a group and the group dynamics during a training
Understand the work carried out by volunteer organizations partners of the SCI Network in Southern countries.
Explore the learning dimension of voluntary work.
Work in accordance with values of SCI network and principles of global education
Share different approaches and working-styles of the SCI-branches concerning preparation of volunteers

Methods

During the training the methods of non-formal education will be used. Active participation from the participants is expected. Participants are expected to present approaches and working-styles of SCI-branch they come from.
A part of the training will also be based on witnesses from volunteers who in past years went to Southern countries for exchanges or work-camps in the framework of the SCI Network.

Cooperation Structure:

1.After this course there is the possibility to apply for volunteering in the South.
2.Applicants are expected to get involved with their local SCI branch.

Participants profile:

Participants are expected:
To be interested in North/South issues and challenges
To be interested in global education
To be willing to have a field experience in a southern country
To be prepared for self-reflection.
To be able to work in English (working language on the training).

Duration and venue:

Obligatory for all:
The training course will take place from 23th to 26th June 2011 in Neu Anspach (near Frankfurt), German with arrival on 23rd June. Detailed program will be given to the participants later.

Number of participants:

28 participants (from Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland and Slovenia)

Financial conditions:

All costs for the accommodation will be covered by the program. A reimbursement of 80% of your travel costs (up to a maximum of 200 Euro) is foreseen.
